The testing must attempt to fill a knowledge gap within the industry, and change or create a new product, process or service.

Waste Management Product Innovations

Qualifying R&D product projects include the testing and development of new or modified:

Recycled waste products
Renewable energy sources e.g. refuse-derived fuel (RDF) or waste-to-energy (WTE)
Compostable bin liners
Waste derived fuel from, for instance, bioreactive landfills

Waste Management Process Innovations

Qualifying R&D process projects include the testing and development of new or modified:

Composting methods, such as irrigation protocols, turning methods or screening systems
Waste electronic and electrical equipment (WEEE) recycling and disposal methods
Hazardous waste processes to identify, handle and safely dispose of the waste
Methods to control or handle contaminations such as Leachate or recycling contamination
Purification process that can remove additives, contaminants, and acidic or flammable chemicals from waste before recycling
Separation and sorting technology such as metal detection and magnetic systems, sensors and image capture software, sink float tanks etc.
Experimenting with new recycling, disposal and treatment methods
Landfill management methods
Waste material recovery methods or equipment
Bespoke waste machinery, equipment, vehicles etc.
Measure to increase safety, capabilities, precision or flexibility at a materials recovery facility
Technology infrastructure such as bespoke robotics, AI, automations, systems, software, apps or even coding
Environmental Management System (EMS)
